Lanzhou

Lanzhou is the capital city of Gansu Province in northwest China. The Yellow River, the Chinese Mother River, runs through the city, ensuring rich crops of many juicy and fragrant fruits. The city is the transportation and telecommunication center of the region. Covering an area of 1631.6 square kilometers (629.96 square miles), it was once a key point on the ancient Silk Road. Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu Province. About 3.2 million people live in the urban area. Lanzhou was an ancient city on the ‘Silk Road’ trade route between Europe and China because it is at the entrance of a lowland corridor called the Hexi Corridor. On either side of this big long valley, there are high mountains, deserts and plateaus that blocked travel to the north and south. The people benefited from the trade through the area, and they were influenced by Western ideas and religions.

The city of Lanzhou, Gansu Province, marks the southeasternmost ancient Silk Road city along the equally ancient Hexi ("Western rivers") Corridor, a reference to the river basins of the Jin and the Wei Rivers - both tributary rivers to the upper reaches of the Yellow River - that form the valley floor that is the Hexi Corridor, which corridor roughly corresponds to the narrow, "bottleneck" stretch of present-day Gansu Province and which separates the Gobi Desert to the north and east from the Taklimakan Desert to the southwest.

At the other end of the "bottleneck" stretch of present-day Gansu Province, i.e., in the northwestern part of the Hexi Corridor, lies the Gansu Province city of Dunhuang, famous especially for its Buddhist grotto art - including both paintings and sculptures, some of the latter depicting pre-Buddhist yaksha (male) and yakshi (female) figures - and for being an early Chinese Buddhism venue devoted to the study and propagation of Buddhism in China, thanks surely to the influence that the Silk Road also had on the "trade" in ideas.

Today, it is a hub of the Silk Road Tourism Ring, with Maiji Caves to the east, Bingling Temple Grottoes to the west, Labrang Monastery to the south and Dunhuang Mogao Caves to the north.

The city downtown comprises five districts: Chengguan, Qilihe, Xigu, Honggu and Anning. Among them, Chengguan District, situated in the eastern part of the city, is the center of politics, economy, culture and transportation. Anning District, in the northwestern part, is the economic development zone as well as the area where most colleges are located. With mountains to the south and north of the city and the Yellow River flowing from the east to the west, Lanzhou is a beautiful modern city with both the grand beauty of northern cities and the prettiness of southern cities.
